New Education Block

Welcome to the Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Brief History of the Department

The Science Education programme with specialty in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biological sciences was first introduced at the first degree level in the College of Education, Uyo, under the University of Port Harcourt linkage programme.

With the establishment of the University of Cross River State in 1983 by the old Cross River State Government, made up of the Government of the present Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, all the existing structures, facilities and programmes of the then College of Education, Uyo, were wholly inherited, absorbed and later restructured into designated faculties for the smooth running of the new University.

At that time, options were created for the streamlining of programmes into the Faculty of Education or their continuation in the various subject Departments and so, the Science Education Unit which comprised mostly Education-based science programmes was constituted as an academic unit under the Faculty of Science. The unit undertook the running of the Bachelor of Science (Education) B.Sc.(Ed) degree programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Biological Science, Mathematics, Home Economics and Agricultural Science.

In the course of time, the Science Education Unit was moved in to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the Faculty of Education with Bachelor Degree programmes offered in the subject disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and Zoology Education.

When the University of Uyo was created in 1991, the Science Education Unit continued to function under the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Following programmes modification and restructuring, Botany and Zoology education were merged to form Biology Education while Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics continued as they were.

In 1992, the Senate of the University of Uyo at the special meeting held on Thursday, October 8, approved the running of a B.Sc.(Ed) degree programme in Integrated Science as contained in the Senate Business Committee Paper A (III) (Page I). This approval brought the number of Bachelor degree programmes in the Science Education Unit to five.

In 1994, the Science Education Unit was granted autonomy as a department under the Faculty of Education.
